We were set the challenge of creating a series of 3D animations to show the construction of iconic Balenciaga garments for a new exhibition at the V&A. The form of the CGI outfits were to not only be true to life, but also be created from the original flat patterns. This was essential when it came to animating the transformation from flat pattern to final garment.
We worked closely with Cultureshock and the V&A to ensure that the pattern pieces were correctly placed and stitched. Using specialist fashion design software, we modelled the garments onto a CG mannequin. This method allowed us to give the fabric physical properties and create accurate folds and draping, as the material interacted with the form of the avatar.
The stages of construction were then animated and rendered in a line work style to clearly show how the dresses come together.
